Are 'professional' portraits worth it?

If any one reads this blog, please give me your opinion. I got cheesy portraits taken of my first two kids at JcPenny, Sears, Target, etc. when they were newborn infants and I didn't really love how they turned out. We actually took much better pictures ourselves of the kids. I am torn on if I should venture that way again just for the sake of it. My sweet Mason is now 3 months and although we have many great pictures of him and we bought a brand new camera right before he was born to be able to take good pictures I am afraid that he will look back when he is older and feel less loved. My friend April said that happened to her sister (also the 3rd child) and she still feels a little bad. Do I spend the money and accept mediocre pictures or just realize that what we have and take in the furture is enough, or is it?

Hey Merci...I did professional pictures for the first three and then did my own for the last two (for their baby pictures). I don't know if you can really tell the difference. I hang up a sheet so there is a background. I blow them up and send them into Costco. They do a great job. If you go onto my blog, the picture of Derek is the one that I took and it is up on the wall with the other kids. I have ditched professional pictures altogether because they get so expensive when they get into school. So, I just do them all myself now.

I mean to get studio pictures done but I never do. There are so many amateur photographers nowadays, you should find one of those people instead. There's probably an aspiring one in your ward right now. I went to a gal in Utah last year for Sommer's pictures and I love them and I'm so glad I did it. I don't think we would have had the same great results with a studio. Good luck!

I wish I got Isla's done. I just couldn't take one that I really liked of her - Then it got to be a little too late. I scheduled her for 1 year photos - which are the only professional photos I've had done of Campbell...so at least they're equally neglected. But to answer your question...I think they're worth it if you go to a good photographer.
